India ETFs and Satyam Fraud

While investigators are looking into charges of fraud at India IT services giant Satyam, ETF investors are asking how the news affects India ETFs.

A quick way to check the relative holdings of an ETF is to go the ETF directory page and click on Holdings in the Key Information section.

According to Investing in India with ETFs, the top India ETFs include:

• iPath® MSCI India Index ETN (INP)
• WisdomTree India Earnings Fund (EPI)
• PowerShares India Portfolio (PIN)

The iPath India Index ETN had 2.5% of its portfolio in Satyam as of October 31.  Top holdings includeReliance IndustriesInfosys Technologies, and Housing Development Finance.

The WisdomTree fund didn’t have a material position in Satyam as of January 14.  Top holdings include Reliance Industries, Infosys Technologies and Oil & Natural Gas Corp.

Saytam makes up less than 0.1% of the PowerShares India Portfolio as of January 14.  In addition to the same top holdings as the WisdomTree fund, Hindustan Lever is also a large component.
