Treasuries Take Off

The lackluster economy has stalled stocks and sent investors in search of safe returns.  As a result, one of the best performing asset classes in recent months has been long term treasuries.

The exchange traded fund Barclays Capital 20+ Year Treasury Bond Fund (TLT) is up nearly 20% in the past four months while stocks are down 11% over the same time period.

TLT seeks to approximate the total rate of return of the long-term sector of the United States Treasury market as defined by the Barclays Capital U.S. 20+ Year Treasury Bond Index. The expense ratio for the $3.4 billion ETF is 0.15% and the 30-Day SEC yield is 3.59%.

Other long term treasury ETFs include the Vanguard Long-Term Bond ETF (BLV) and the SPDR Barclays Capital Long Term Treasury ETF (TLO).
