ETF Assets Decline 9% in February

ETF Assets declined 9.1% or $45 billion for the month of February according to the Snapshot report fromState Street Global Advisors.

Equity assets declined the most as the S&P 500 fell 10.7% and the MSCI EAFE fell 10.2% for the month.

The declines in equities were partially offset by gains in commodities.  Gold lead the way, climbing to $952 an ounce, up 3.5% on the month.  As a result, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) grew by $6 billion in February.

Northern Trust exited the ETF management business, closing 17 funds with a total of $29 million of assets.  4 new ETFs were launched in February including the SPDR Barclays Capital Intermediate Term Credit Bond ETF (ITR).
